Adaptations for Time

Suggested Adaptations:

  • Increase the time allowed for assignments, assessments or instruction

  • Use visual aides to help students stay on track

    • Use a Time Timer©, countdown clocks, timers or time strips (Velcro tear off pieces every 1- 5 minutes) to help students ‘see’ time left for the task

    • Create a desk top schedule so students can anticipate what task is next and be ready for transitions

    • Use ‘now’ and ‘next’ cards to use on the desk top schedule for visual support for student

    • Use ‘work’ and ‘break cards’ to use on the desk top schedule to help students stay on task and know there is a break coming soon

    • Create time management planners that show estimated time students anticipate it will take for a task and then actual time it took. This helps the student become more aware of time

  • Use a “work/break” format to help sustain student attention

    • A sample format is the student works for 10 min then gets a break for 2-5 mins (dependent on student) to do a relaxing, stress relieving or revitalizing task

      • Examples of breaks include:

        • Heavy lifting (taking a box of books to the office or library)

        • Music break (listening to or creating)

        • Colouring

        • Doing puzzles

        • Physical activity (skipping, walking, trampoline…)

        • Deep pressure time under a weighted blanket

        • Building with Lego or blocks

        • Reading/looking at a book
