Fundamentals of Structured Literacy- Course Overview

 

We offer a variety of course options for people interested in taking the Fundamentals of Structured Literacy course. The combination of Level 1 and Level 2 courses enable you to teach students to read and write through a multi-sensory, systematic, cumulative, fun approach.

This course will improve your student's skills in the areas of:

  • phonemic awareness,

  • phonics,

  • spelling,

  • language development,

  • reading fluency,

  • reading comprehension,

  • and working memory.

 

This course will teach you:

  • what defines structured literacy,

  • why using a structured literacy approach improves reading skills,

  • what is a cumulative, multi-sensory approach,

  • why a cumulative multi-sensory approach is essential in your instruction,

  • how to administer an initial assessment to target your interventions,

  • how to use a cumulative, multi-sensory approach in your:

  • tier 1 classroom instruction,

  • tier 2 targeted small-group instruction,

  • tier 3 intensive one-to-one support.

  • How to monitor the progress of your students to ensure optimal progress

 

This course is open to anyone interested in working with adults or children with reading and writing difficulties.  If you are interested in tutoring, a parent looking for help, a teacher or a teacher assistant wanting to increase their knowledge of literacy instruction or add strategies to their tool kit this course will help.

You will learn through a multisensory, systematic, cumulative approach through class lecture, small group instruction and one-on-one coaching. You will be guided through every step and will prepare and practice lessons with a student.

Level 1 (Basic):​

 

Length:  40 Hours

Summer Course runs for 8 days (9am-4pm)

During the school year the course runs for four evenings and two weekends 

(Week 1: Thurs and Fri 4pm-9pm, Sat and Sun 9am-4pm  Week 2: Sat and Sun 9am-4pm,  Mon and Tues 4pm-9pm)

You will learn and teach:

  • How We Learn

  • Phonograms

  • Syllables and Syllabication

  • Spelling Rules

  • Sight Words

  • Blending Sounds to Read

  • Reading

  • Sequencing of the Alphabet

  • Sequences

  • Penmanship

You will learn and practice:

  • Visual Drill

  • Auditory Drill

  • Simultaneous Oral Spelling

By the end of the course, trainees will have completed 6 lesson plans using multi-sensory aids, 6-1 hour practicum lessons, mastery of the Level 1 Auditory and Visual Sounds and a final review.

Level 2 (Advanced):

 

Length:  40 hours

Summer Course runs for 8 days (9am-4pm)

During the school year the course runs for four evenings and two weekends. 

(Week 1: Thurs and Fri 4pm-9pm, Sat and Sun 9am-4pm.  Week 2: Sat and Sun 9am-4pm, Mon and Tues 4pm-9pm)

You will review:

  • Phonograms

  • Syllables and Syllabication

  • Spelling Rules

  • Sight Words

You will learn and teach:

  • Suffixes, Prefixes and Roots

  • Vocabulary

  • Advanced Spelling Practice

  • Key word outling

  • Writing paragraphs from key word outlines

  • Adding sentence dress-ups

  • Adding sentence openers

  • Writing research papers from one source

  • Writing research papers from multi-sources

 

By the end of the course, trainees will have completed 6 lesson plans using multi-sensory aids, 6-1 hour practicum lessons, mastery of the Level 2 Auditory and Visual Sounds and a final review.
